a) PhysSURG C – colorectal cancer
b) PhysSURG B – breast cancer
c) PhysSURG PABOS - obesity
Before elective surgery for colorectal, breast cancer or obesity respectively, patients are included after informed consent and randomized to either control – established preoperative routine or intervention – two weeks of extra physical activity for 30 minutes daily at a level where the patient is short of breath but with retained ability to talk. The activity is at the preference of the patient but suggestions include walks, jogging, swimming and such like. For those with abdominal surgery (trials C and PABOS) respiratory muscle training is included for the two weeks before operation. For all three trials a further four weeks of activity starts when the patient is discharged from hospital.
The hypothesis is that with 30 min daily extra physical activity in connection with surgery patients will return to work and/or experience of physical/mental well-being significantly earlier than the patients who underwent surgery without added physical activity.
PhysSURG C started inclusion in 2015 at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and SKAS/Skövde hospital. To date 530 patients have been included. A power calculation based on the first 100 randomized patients was conducted during a preplanned interim analysis, resulting in a cohort size of 620 patients.
PhysSURG B started inclusion in November 2016 at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and included 202 patients during the first year. A power calculation based on the first 100 randomized patients was conducted during a preplanned interim analysis, in July 2017. Last patient was included December 2018 making it 400 included patients total.
